Irene Cara Escalera was born in The Bronx, New York City, in the United States to Gaspar and Louise Escalera.
Her father, Gaspar, was a retired saxophonist and factory worker, while her mother, Louise, worked as an usher in movie theaters.
According to Ethnicelebs, Irene was Puerto Rican on her father’s side and Cuban on her mother’s. Gaspar was also of African descent.
Irene was the youngest of four siblings, two sisters, and two brothers, in her family.
Irene was one of the five Little Miss America finalists when she was just three years old. Before taking music, dance, and acting classes seriously, she began playing the piano by ear. When she was five, she took her first dance lessons.

In April 1986, Irene Cara wed Conrad Palmisano, a stuntman, actor, and director in the film industry. Los Angeles, California, served as the location of the wedding. However, five years after getting married, they got divorced.
