The death of David Miranda, a columnist for Guardian US, was announced on Tuesday by his husband, American journalist, and lawyer Glenn Greenwald.
The late Brazilian politician is survived by his husband and their two adopted sons, João and Jonathan.
Miranda was remembered as a vivacious, loving, and combative personality who was a powerful voice of resistance in Brazil.
According to Glenn Greenwald’s tweet, David Miranda passed away just a day before his 38th birthday, surrounded by family and friends.
David was hospitalized last August due to a severe gastrointestinal infection, and after spending nine months in intensive care, he took his last breath today.
Talking about his husband, Greenwald fondly recalled how Miranda grew up in Jacarezinho, one of Rio’s poorest favelas, and lost his mother at the age of five.
Despite his difficult upbringing, Miranda became the first openly gay man elected to Rio’s city council and played a key role in the Edward Snowden leaks in 2013.
Greenwald also reflected on how his husband’s inspiring life story, passion, and energy inspired many people.
The couple met on Rio’s Ipanema beach when Miranda accidentally spilled his drink on him with a ball.
