In the instance of Cynthia Hoffman’s death, the five adolescents reportedly met together in May or the first few days of June to plan the murder and chose Hoffman as the target because her family said she had a developmental disorder. Family members claim that Hoffman had referred to Brehmer as her “best buddy.”

The adolescents told the police that they were each eligible for a percentage of the payment that Schilmiller had offered them for taking part in the murder. Brehmer and McIntosh are accused of claiming to be hikers while joining Hoffman on a trip to Thunderbird Falls in Chugiak on June 2. In accordance with the allegations made against them, after arriving, the gang allegedly diverted from the path and proceeded down the Eklutna River’s bank until they came to a clearing, when McIntosh and Brehmer allegedly duct taped Hoffman’s wrists, feet, and mouth.
