Boyd started piano lessons when he was a young child. When he was a teenager, he started to write songs. Boyd left college early to join Incubus.
Early in the 1990s, Boyd, lead guitarist Mike Einziger, and drummer Jose Pasillas formed the group.
Later, Gavin “DJ Lyfe” Koppell and bassist Alex “Dirk Lance” Katunich were added to the group.
They were later changed. The band first started playing in nightclubs in Los Angeles.
The group’s first studio album, Fungus Amongus, was released in 1995.
They secured a contract with Sony’s Immortal Records in 1996. The label was renamed and given the moniker Epic Records. Their first EP, Enjoy Incubus, was released in 1997. It was their first release on a significant label.
Their second studio album, S.C.I.E.N.C.E., was released in 1997.
