Before his deployment to London, Black was CNN International’s Russia reporter based in Moscow. In this capacity, he was responsible for a number of high-profile reports from the region, including Vladimir Putin’s landslide re-election as president and the notorious arrest and incarceration of Pussy Riot, a protest punk band.
Most recently, Black has been a key figure in CNN’s coverage of the Ukrainian crisis, from the Maidan protests in Kiev to the unrest in Donetsk between pro-Russian separatists and government forces. Black was also on the scene at the crash site of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, broadcasting about the crash and its aftermath. For his reporting on this story and the assassination of an anti-government protester in Independence Square, Black received two AIB awards in 2014.
Black joined CNN International as a freelance reporter in April 2007 and has covered a variety of stories for the network, including the massacres in a Finnish school, the McCartney-Mills divorce trials, the suspected terror attacks in London, the search for Madeleine McCann, and the Princess Diana inquiry. Prior to joining CNN International, Black spent seven years as a reporter for Australia’s most-watched news program, Seven News, in Sydney, where he covered the Sri Lankan Asian Tsunami.
