Formerly from Canada, Kathlyn served as a drama teacher. Her sibling is the well-known director, actor, and writer Warren Beatty. Their father moved the family first to Arlington, then to Norfolk. In Arlington, she played softball in junior high school.
When Shirley was young, her mother accompanied her to ballet practice due to her knee issues. She was more at ease on stage thanks to her ballet instruction. While still in school, she started appearing in minor plays. She engaged in theatrical productions while she was a student at Washington-Lee High School.
