On September 16, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York, Koby Altman was born to his mother, Deborah Altman. He was her sole offspring. Deborah, his mother, worked as a social worker at Sheepshead Bay High School. Altman was raised by his mother as a single parent because his father was missing from his life as a child.
Even though his family was lower middle class, his mother never made him feel deprived of anything. According to Altman, Deborah was a kind, forceful, and independent lady who taught him all she knew, including basketball. Deborah, a University of North Carolina graduate, has been a fan of the New York Knicks since she was in college.
Koby was inspired by his mother’s love of games and began playing basketball at an early age. After graduation in 1999, Koby attended Middlebury College, where he played point guard for the basketball team. However, he never played professional basketball.
In 2007, he began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Amherst College. Before joining the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2012, Altman coached at Southern Illinois (2009-2010) and Columbia (2010-2012).
