Sam Zell was born into a Jewish family that had immigrated from Poland. In Poland, his Father was a grain dealer.
Right before Hitler’s troops attacked the railroad rails in Poland in 1939, the parents and their eldest sister, Leah, fled to Tokyo, Japan.
They continued their trip and arrived in the United States in 1941. When the parents came in the United States, they changed their names to Rochelle and Bernard Zell.
