The Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL), where he played for two years as a defender for the Kamloops Chiefs, was where the adventure of the television analyst began.
He started the 1976–77 season with the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League (AHL), but halfway through the year, he switched to the Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association (WHA). Up until 1979, he stayed with the Stingers.
Melrose joined the Wunnupeg Jets for the 1979–80 season when the WHA was abolished and a few of its clubs were merged into the National Hockey League (NHL).
