Magill is a native of Fargo, North Dakota, and the daughter of Frank Magill, a senior federal judge on the Eighth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals. Her brother, Frank Magill Jr., is a district judge in Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1995, after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in history from Yale University in 1988, when she was also the president of the Yale College Democrats.
