The political career of Vivian Balakrishnan in Singapore has been prosperous.
In 2001, he entered politics by obtaining a seat in Holland-Bukit Panjang GRC as a member of the PAP team.
Over the years, he held important roles, including Minister of State for National Development and Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry.
In 2004, Balakrishnan became Minister for Community Development, Youth, and Sports, where he focused on enhancing public assistance.
He led the PAP team to victory in Holland–Bukit Timah GRC during the 2011 general election.
His remarks on the Singapore Democratic Party and government spending on the Summer Youth Olympics brought him criticism while he was a minister.
Despite these challenges, he was appointed Minister for the Environment and Water Resources in 2011 and later became the Minister for Foreign Affairs after the 2015 general election.
