Their relationship started making headlines again in 2023 after Austin won a Golden Globe for his starring role in the acclaimed biopic Elvis. During his acceptance speech, the actor recounted the tale of how his "friend" encouraged him to audition for the film. Fans quickly speculated that Vanessa was the "friend."

In fact, in early August 2019, Vanessa guest co-hosted Live With Kelly and Mark (formerly known as Live with Kelly and Ryan) and told a similar story about encouraging Austin to throw his hat in the ring.
