Vagit Alekperov, a prominent figure in the petroleum industry, was born on September 1, 1950, in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR. Growing up, Alekperov was surrounded by the oilfields, deeply influenced by his father’s work in the industry. This early exposure ignited his passion for pursuing a career in the petroleum sector.
In 1974, Alekperov graduated from the esteemed Azerbaijan Oil and Chemistry Institute, armed with a comprehensive education in the field. Equipped with his newfound knowledge, he embarked on his professional journey, starting at Kaspmorneft. His determination and expertise propelled him forward, and he later joined Surgutneftegaz in Western Siberia.
Alekperov’s dedication and notable accomplishments caught the attention of industry leaders, resulting in his appointment as the deputy minister of the Oil and Gas Industry of the Soviet Union in 1990.
