Wrapping up his education in 1985, Bob began working at General Electric. During his 15-year stay at the company, Bob worked in numerous senior roles including CFO of GE Transportation Systems (1988-1994), Finance for GE Medical Systems (1997-1998), and vice president of finance and CFO of GE Lighting (1998-1999).
Bob left GE in 1999 and joined Webvan as the vice-president of finance. In 2000, Bob was named the company’s COO and CFO. He served in the position until 2001 before being promoted to CEO. Four months into the post and the company went under, leaving Bob no choice but to join TRW as CFO. He remained with TRW from July 2001 to December 2002. During the same time, Bob was named as the CFO of Northrop Grumman Space & Mission Systems Corporation. In 2003, Bob moved onto HP Enterprise Services, where he served the role of CFO from 2003 to 2006.

In February of 2006, Bob was appointed as the CFO of eBay. He served the office from March 2006 until July 2015. He joined General Atlantic LLC as an operating partner in September of 2015 and worked there exactly for a year. In September of 2016, Bob was unveiled as the new CFO of Intel. He officially assumed office from the 10th of October 2016 and was the first outside CFO Intel had recruited since 1983. He became interim CEO in June 2018 after the resignation of Brian Krzanich. He was appointed full-time CEO in January 2019 . however, he stepped down as CEO of Intel in February 2021 and was replaced by Pat Gelsinger. Then, he joined Andreessen Horowitz, a prominent venture capital firm, in July 2021. He also serves on the board of directors of eBay.
