In 2017, when California voted to legalize recreational marijuana, a local artist took it upon himself to celebrate in the most outlandish way. He changed the Hollywood sign to say “Hollyweed.” Zachary Cole Fernandez was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor trespassing, The Guardian reported.
The 30-year-old quickly claimed credit for the stunt in an interview with Vice, alongside his creative partner Sarah Fern, before he was even arrested. “It was … a lot of work,” he told the online publication. “It took me two hours. It’s exhausting! Your adrenaline is pumping and then you just crash so hard when it bottoms out. We collaborated before, packed everything, trying to keep it simple and easy.”
