Helen Folasade Adu was born in the Nigerian city of Ibadan, in the state of Oyo, to Adebisi Adu, a Nigerian lecturer in economics, and Anne Hayes, an English district nurse. She had to deal with her parents’ divorce at a young age, when she was only four years old. She had a brother named Banji Adu, and their mother Anne Hayes looked after them both. Sade’had a natural talent for drumming, then wanted to be a writer, and finally chose to attend art school. She grew up listening to soul legends’ music.
