Dean Anderson’s acting career started in the late 1970s, and in 1976 he had an appearance on the 1976–81 American soap opera General Hospital. In 1982, he played the lead in the CBS television show Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. He made an appearance in the 1986 movie Ordinary Heroes.
Following his involvement in the television series MacGyver, he gained notoriety and popularity in 1985, which he maintained through 1992. The seven-year-long series was a big hit and catapulted Anderson to new heights. From 1997 until 2005, Richard portrayed Jack O’Neil on Stargate SG-1. He made a total of twelve episodes of the comedy series Legend in 1995.
He made a cameo appearance on The Simpsons in 2005. In 2006, he was featured in a Super Bowl XL ad for MasterCard. He also had a brief cameo in what seemed to be a parody of Saturday Night Live, featuring the character MacGruber. Richard appeared in Stargate Universe and Stargate Atlantis from 2009. He played the recurrent character David Smith on Fairly Legal.
