When it comes to his musical career, Randy got his start at the age of 17. When he was 18 years old, his debut song as a performer was “Golden Gridiron Boy,” which was published in 1962.

He decided to focus on songwriting and arranging for the next years after the single was a failure.

He briefly played with the band the Tikis in the middle of the 1960s. The Tikis eventually changed their name to Harpers Bizarre, who is most known for their 1967 hit song “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy),” which was written by Paul Simon.

Jake Holmes and Newman collaborated on the “Most Original Soft Drink Ever” jingle for Dr. Pepper in the 1970s.

His tune “It’s a Jungle Out There” won him the 2004 Emmy Award for Best Main Title Music. It was featured in season 2 of the USA Network television series Monk in 2003.

He gave his support to the 2011 CD The Randy Newman Project by jazz singer Roseanna Vitro (Motéma Music).
