He began playing football as a profession in 1968 when he was drafted third round of the 1968 NBA draft by the San Diego Rockets and the 1968 ABA Draft by the Oakland Oaks. During the 1970-71 season, Lantz played for the Houston Rockets where he averaged 20.6 points and 5 rebounds per game. However, during the 1976–77 season, he injured his back during training and never fully recovered. Lantz officially announced his retirement on July 2, 1977, just a week and a half before his 31st birthday.
