She made her professional chess debut in 2010 at the 39th Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. In Uganda, she competed in a women’s tournament for six rounds on board two and one round on board one. Journalists started noticing, writing about, and commenting on her games.
They noticed she was achieving unprecedented levels of success despite having received no formal education.

By 2012, she had won the Women’s Junior Chess Championship three times, making her one of Uganda’s first female chess players. In the 2013 National Junior Chess Championship, she won the under-20 ladies’ division but not the open division.

She was also a member of the 2017 Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship team in Columbus, Ohio, which defeated Oberlin College, which had held the title for the previous four years. Phiona Mutesi won three matches and drew one for her school. She also attended the film’s premiere.
