Luhrmann was born on September 17, 1962, to Barbara Carmel (formerly Brennan) and Leonard Luhrmann in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
The 35-year-old actor was born and reared in the tiny rural community of Herons Creek in central New South Wales.
His father, Leonard, owned a gas station and a theater, while his mother, Barbara, taught ballroom dancing and owned a dress shop.
Because of his hairdo, the award-winning director was given the moniker “Baz” at school; the name comes from the puppet character Basil Brush.
The Get Down, a Netflix television series set in the South Bronx in the 1970s, was created in 2016 by Baz and his wife. His wife worked as an executive producer on the show.
