Nicholas King Nolte was born in Omaha, Nebraska, United States, to his parents, Franklin Arthur Nolte (1904–1978) and Helen King (1914–2000).

Franklin was a farmer’s son who ran away from home and almost quit high school. He was a three-time letter winner in football at Iowa State University. 

Helen was a department store buyer and later became an expert antique dealer and businesswoman.

Nick has one sibling: an older sister, Nancy, who served as an Executive for the Red Cross.

His maternal grandfather, Matthew Leander King, was prominent in early aviation and invented the hollow-tile silo.

Likewise, his maternal grandmother ran Iowa State University’s student union.

Nick is an American national with German, English, Scots-Irish, and Swiss-German ancestry.

He attended Kingsley Elementary School in Waterloo, Iowa, and later Westside High School in Omaha, where he was the football team’s kicker.

He also attended Benson High School, where he was expelled for being caught drunk during practice and hiding the drink.
