The Standard Newfypoos are commonly created by crossing a Newfoundland with a Standard Poodle. However, a Miniature Poodle may be crossed with a Newfoundland creating Miniature Newfypoos that weigh 35 to 65 pounds ( approx. 16 to 29 kg ) and have a height of 18 to 21 inches ( approx. 46 to 53 cm ). In most cases, a Newfoundland is used as a dam while the sire is a poodle to reduce the risk of dystocia during birth.
