Mary Tyler Moore met Dr. Robert Levine through a coincidental encounter.
Moore’s mother, Marjorie Hackett Moore, fell ill and needed medical attention. Dr. Levine happened to be the doctor on call at the time. As he was about to leave after attending to her mother, Dr. Levine offered the typical doctor’s advice, saying, “Mary, if you have concerns or any further questions, just call me.”
Mary Tyler Moore caught Dr. Robert Levine off guard when she asked him if acute loneliness was a valid reason to call him. Taken aback, he responded by saying he couldn’t think of a better reason to be called at 3 am.
