Whitley was a student at the same San Francisco high school as Simpson, the man who would become her husband. Whitley was dating Al Cowlings, Orenthal’s acquaintance, at the time. Yes, he is the same Al from the famous 1994 police chase who drove the white broncos.
Following the breakdown of her relationship with Al, Whitley and Simpson began dating. In actuality, for their disagreements as a marriage, Cowling had asked his friend Simpson to speak with Marguerite.
Instead, she ended her relationship with Al and began dating Simpson. The three of them eventually made up, even if Cowling wasn’t completely content with their relationship at first.
The pair decided to get married after dating for a while. On July 24, 1967, a private ceremony was held to exchange vows after Whitley turned eighteen. Their hometown of San Francisco served as the venue for the ceremony. Simpson was 19 and his bride was 18 when they got married.
Years later, in 1995, Whitley waxed poetic in a 20/20 interview with Barbara Walters about her nuptials to her ex-husband. Marguerite remarked, “It was fun; we were such kids.” She continued,
Our parents were no longer the ones to whom we had to answer. We could go out all night and have a party. It wasn’t a wild and crazy thing.
