Li Lu is a popular Chinese-born American value investor, businessman, and philanthropist who is the founder and chairman of Himalaya Capital Management. Before emigrating to America, Li was among the student leaders of the 1989 Tiananmen Square student protests. In 2021, Li also co-founded The Asian American Foundation and works as its chairman. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Columbia University and a member of the Board of Trustees of California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
In 1990, Li released a book about his experience in China named Moving the Mountain: My Life in China. In 2020, he wrote and released a book in China called Civilization, Modernization, Value Investment, and China. He started his profession in investment banking as a corporate finance associate at Donaldson, Lufkin, and Jenrette in 1996. From 1998 until 2004, Li managed both a hedge fund and a venture capital fund. He has been recognized as the guy who introduced the Chinese battery and electric car maker BYD Company to Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett. Li is an informal advisor to BYD. Li’s investment partnership possesses about 2.5% of BYD.
