Kal Penn made his film debut in Express: Aisle to Glory in 1988, launching his career Toto get more roles, and he began going by the stage name Kal Penn, a play on his birth name Kalpe n. He was concerned that his difficult foreign name would put off prospective employers.

Penn changed his stage name to “Kal Penn” to prove to his friends that his Indian surname was not preventing him from finding acting wor k. Instead, every one of his calls was returned, and his callbacks increased by 50%. He still prefers to be addressed by his first name.
