Jonathan Frakes was born and raised in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, to father James R. Frakes and mother Doris J. Yingling, who used to work as an English professor at Lehigh University. His father used to work for the New York Times Book Review as a critic and editor. Frakes had a brother named Daniel, who died in 1997 from pancreatic cancer, and his father died in 2002.
