At Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s picture ceremony on Wednesday, former Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) became tearful as he shared a message from his daughters.
He praised Pelosi for leading the Democratic caucus for two decades in his speech.
“You have consistently shown kindness to me, my family, and, to be honest, my team here in Washington.
Additionally, Madam Speaker, I have to admit that my daughters encouraged me to tell the Speaker how much they admired her. Boehner choked up as he spoke on the platform.
He chuckled as the audience cheered, “If you couldn’t tell, my girls are Democrats.”
Boehner, who headed the House Republicans from 2007 to 2015, served as minority Leader from 2007 to 2011 during Pelosi’s first term.
The unveiling of Pelosi’s image, which will hang in the Speaker’s Lobby of the Capitol with paintings of prior speakers — including Boehner — took place on Wednesday with the participation of members of the House, senators, and Pelosi’s family.
When Pelosi took office as Speaker in 2007, the Ohio Republican handed it to her. Following the takeover of the House by the Republicans in 2011, she handed Boehner the gavel again.
