For the purpose of acquiring the Los Angeles Rams, Robert Irsay, Irsay’s father, exchanged franchises with Carroll Rosenbloom, the proprietor of the Baltimore Colts, when Irsay was twelve years old.
After graduating from SMU in 1982, he commenced employment with the Colts’ professional personnel. He assumed the roles of vice president and general manager in 1984, one month following the Colts’ relocation from Baltimore to Indianapolis.
Jim was appointed senior executive vice president, general manager, and chief operating officer in April 1996, after the demise of his father in 1995, who had suffered a stroke.
Following the demise of Jim’s father in 1997, a legal dispute ensued between Jim and his stepmother over the ownership of the franchise. Ultimately, at the age of 37, Jim emerged as the youngest proprietor in the annals of NFL history.
Following Jim’s 1995 acquisition, the Colts compiled a regular season record of 258-191-1. The 258 victories during that period are ranked fourth in the National Football League, as reported by Pro Football Reference.
Ten division titles are in addition to 18 postseason appearances, two Super Bowls, and Super Bowl XLI. Indianapolis finished the period from 2000 to 2009 with 115 regular-season victories, ranking second among all NFL teams in that span.
Irsay has engaged in several partnerships with Pro Football Hall of Fame coaches, players, and executives since his induction into the organization in 1984.
Among these are Eric Dickerson (Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 1999), Edgar James (2020), and Peyton Manning (2021). Marshall Faulk (2011), Tony Dungy (2016), Marvin Harrison (2016), and Marshall Faulk (2011) have all collaborated with Irsay.
