In terms of his educational background, he attended DeMatha Catholic High School. He played basketball for the local high school, where he won the 1985 USA Today High School Player of the Year award.Ferry attended Duke University after receiving his diploma from DeMatha, where he played college basketball from 1985 to 1989. Over the course of his four years in college, he was a standout player. In 1986 and 1988, he also assisted in guiding the Blue Devils to the Final Four.
Ferry won the ACC Player of the Year award in 1989, his senior year. He was also a first-team All-American who was widely regarded.
