He has worked as a professor at New York University, Columbia University, and Howard University. Bernstein’s main areas of interest are the state, federal, and international economic policies, in particular, the middle-class squeeze, income inequality, as well as mobility trends in low-wage labor markets, employment and earnings, international comparisons, and also poverty. Additionally, he is well known as a critic of free trade agreements like NAFTA (North American Free Trade).
He began serving as a senior official in 1992 at the Economic Policy Institute (EPI). He later worked as a deputy chief economist from 1995 to 1996 in the United States Department of Labor. Bernstein later went back to work as a senior economist as well as director of the Living Standards Program the EPI until 2020 when he was appointed by Joe Biden.
