Brian Greene is an American mathematician, theoretical physicist, and string theorist.
Brian Greene was born to his father, Alan Greene and his mother in New York City. The prominent scientist has a Jewish background.
The scientist’s dad was a former vaudeville performer who eventually worked as a voice teacher and composer.
After graduating from Stuyvesant High School, Brian Greene enrolled at Harvard University in 1980. He majored in physics.
He earned his bachelor’s degree with summa cum laude honors in 1984. The World Science Festival co-founder graduated from Magdalen College in Oxford with a DPhil in theoretical physics in 1987.
Greene also took piano lessons from concert pianist Jack Gibbons during his days at Oxford. The former physics professor at Cornell University has extensively researched string theory.
He is well-known for assisting in clarifying the various configurations that string theory’s curled-up dimensions can adopt.
The most significant of these shapes are called Calabi-Yau manifolds; when the extra dimensions adopt those specific shapes, three-dimensional physics displays an abstract symmetry known as supersymmetry.
He has appeared in several television programs, including The Big Band Theory, PBS television specials, and movies Frequency and The Last Mimzy.
Greene is now a part of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists Board of Sponsors.
