Jamuna was born on August 30, 1936, in Hampi, Madras Presidency, British India (present-day Karnataka, India).
Her parents, Nippani Srinivasa Rao and Kowsalya Devi, were an intercaste couple as her father was a Madhav Brahmin and her mother, a Vaisya.
When Jamuna was seven, her father was in a turmeric and tobacco business, and the family moved to Andra Pradesh.
The late actress was married to Juluri Ramana Rao, a zoology professor at SV University. Ramana Rao died of cardiac arrest on November 10, 2014, aged 86.
The couple wed in 1965 and were the parents of two children; a son, Vamsee Juluri, and a daughter, Sravanthi.
Their son, Vamsee Juluri (born in 1969), is a writer and professor of media studies at the University of San Francisco.
Jamuna was a politician who joined the Congress party in the 1980s and was soon elected to the Lok Sabha, representing the Rajahmundry constituency in 1989.
However, after losing the 1991 election, Jamuna quit politics and retired from acting and politics.
With over 100 movies in Telegu, Kannada, Tamil, and Hindi, Jamuna remains one of the leading actresses in India’s golden age of cinema.
