Heidi Berry was born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 6, 1964. She was the eldest child of Judith Ann Hawkins, a white English immigrant mother, and Jerome Jesse Berry, an African-American father. Halle Berry, her younger sister, is the mother of two children, including a son named Maceo Robert Martinez.
