On November 23, 1948, Vilanch was born in New York City, New York. His mother and father reared him, doing everything in their power to support their sons and daughters in achieving their career aspirations. But since they had adopted Bruce, they were not his biological parents. Bruce went to elementary and secondary school, but after getting his diploma, he started working in the entertainment business. At the age of 21, he produced his first movie, Inside Story (1973), and in 1970, he started creating television ads for NBC.
When he was older, he tried to pursue a career in entertainment. He attended at Ohio State University after graduating from high school to study news reporting and drama. While still in school, he performed in many plays as a performer and wrote play audits. He started writing as a result, and soon he started writing.
