By 1990, Hamilton was co-authoring novels with her mother. She wrote for Hyperion Books for Children/Disney Book Group in New York from 1997 to 2000. She co-wrote six Dumpy the Truck novels at work.
In 2000, Emma joined Harper Collins. It’s an old and large book publisher. She co-wrote children’s books and oversaw the Julie Andrews Collection imprint. Young Artists and Writers Project at Stony Brook Southampton named Emma executive director in 2009. She writes about Long Island and NYC interdisciplinary writing programs.
