At this present moment, she works at The Atlantic. Here, Emily works as a contributing writer. Slate’s Dear Prudence advice column was turned over to her by outgoing columnist Margo Howard in 2006. Dear Prudence appears 4 times a week. Furthermore, it includes one day of live chats and one day in which the letters are responded to using a video instead of text.
She published her final Dear Prudence column in November 2015. Daniel M. Lavery, co-founder of The Toast replaced Emily. In 2021, Daniel left Dear Prudence. Additionally, she hosted a podcast titled Manners for the Digital Age alongside Farhad Manjoo, Slate’s then-technology columnist. Emily wrote a regular feature on Slate entitled Human Guinea Pig. Here, she tries unusual hobbies or activities.
Her What the Dog Did: Tales from a Formerly Reluctant Dog Owner was published by Bloomsbury in June 2005. Dogwise named it the Best Book of the Year in 2005. Moreover, What the Dog Did was selected as the Best General Interest Dog Book by the Dog Writers Association of America. In addition, Emily was a guest on The Colbert Report two times.
She has been a guest on many radio programs including Minnesota Public Radio and The Emily Rooney Show. Emily has written pieces for The New York Times Magazine about the crash of Air Florida Flight 90 and the worldwide disappearance of frogs. Into the bargain, she has written op-eds for The Washington Post on politics, motherhood, and global warming.
