John Franklin Candy was raised in Newmarket, Ontario, after being born in Toronto. He was the son of Evangeline Aker Candy (1916-2009) and Sidney James Candy (1920-1955).
John was raised in a Catholic working-class home. Sidney, his father, tragically passed away at age 35 from heart problems when John was just five years old.
He attended Toronto’s Catholic high school, Neil McNeil. He had initially wanted to play football for the Toronto Argonauts, but a knee injury kept him from doing so.
Later, he attended McMaster University after completing his journalism studies at Centennial College. John started performing in college.
Christopher Michael and Jennifer Anne were the couple’s two children. John Candy wed Rosemary Hobor in 1979.
Candy died suddenly on March 4, 1994, while Wagons East was being filmed. His death, according to a spokesman, was caused by a heart attack while he was sleeping. He was just 43 when he was born on October 31, 1950.
Candy had a reputation for leading an unhealthy lifestyle. He frequently overate, smoked, drank, and used cocaine. His father’s untimely death from a heart attack was another notable family characteristic.
John afterward made an effort to control his weight and enhance his health, but it was too late, and he passed very suddenly.
