Maitreyi Ramakrishnan began acting in school plays in Grade 10. She was most likely a comic book fan who aspired to be an animator for comic book creation. She changed her mind last year at Meadowvale Secondary School. Maitreyi landed the role in “Never Have I Ever” less than a year later.
Maitreyi also postponed her acceptance to York University’s theatre program in Toronto. She had planned to attend in the fall after graduating from high school so that she could film “Never Have I Ever” in Los Angeles.
Maitreyi plays Devi Vishwakumar in the Netflix rom-com “Never Have I Ever.” Mindy Kaling chose her from among 15,000 applicants for the show’s open casting call in 2019. She also recorded her audition tape at a local library using her mother’s camera.
She was eventually asked to submit four additional videos before being invited to Los Angeles for a screen test and being offered the role. Ramakrishnan was 17 at the time she was cast.
And she hadn’t done any professional work or acting yet. Her casting, on the other hand, drew a lot of media attention, especially in Canada. She drew a lot of attention because of the nature of the open casting call and her Tamil Canadian identity.
In addition, Today named her one of eighteen “Groundbreakers” in 2019. It was a list of female role models who were breaking down barriers and making a difference in the world. Her performance in the show was well-received as well. Furthermore, it was dubbed a “breakout performance” by the majority of critics. Ramakrishnan will also narrate the Children’s Programming segment at the 8th Canadian Screen Awards in 2020.
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan was raised in a multicultural family as well. She has also studied Bharatnatyam and Ballet. She also plays the piano. Likewise, she was a member of a Jazz band in which she played the piano.
