Now that Brett is solo in Chicago, co-showrunner Andrea Newman told TVLine ahead of the Season 11 premiere that Brett is “really struggling with this decision about long distance and Casey, and she does love him deeply, so she’s got a big decision to make.”
Newman added that Brett, who once based many of her life decisions on men, was finally going to find more independence and put herself first. “She’s at the crossroads now where she’s focused more on what her decisions are,” she added.
While the showrunner didn't outwardly reveal whether or not Brettsey would stay together, we found out pretty quickly — as in, by the end of the Season 11 premiere. After Brett's ex-fiancé Kyle made an unexpected visit (and revealed that he's now engaged to someone else), Brett was forced to put her own relationship in harsh perspective.
In a phone call to Casey, Brett said, "Our stars just didn’t align, that’s all. The timing just wasn’t right. But Matt, maybe someday."
Now that Brett is focused on her own future and what she wants out of life, viewers can expect to see a tremendous amount of growth from her character — sans Casey. But that doesn't necessarily mean the door is closed on the couple forever.
When asked if they hope to revisit the relationship, co-showrunner Derek Haas told TVLine, "Oh, yes! We’re always hoping those stars align."
Tune in to see what becomes of Brettsey when new episodes of Chicago Fire air on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
