After earning his Juris Doctor, Brian moved to Providence, Rhode Island, and joined Edward & Angell LLP, the state’s biggest commercial law practice. He was a lawyer for several years before entering the banking business.

In the United States, he worked in several financial jobs, and his career took off, making him a household name in the banking world. He joined Fleet Boston Bank as deputy general counsel in 1993, a post he held for the following six years.

He was appointed to Executive Vice President in 1999. At the time, his primary responsibilities were to oversee the bank’s brokerage and management activities. He served in this capacity until FleetBoston Financial was purchased by Bank of America (BoA) in 2004.

Brian was designated president of global wealth and investment management following the merger. In 2008, Merrill Lynch was bought by Bank of America, and Brian was named CEO.

He was designated president of Bank of America’s Consumer and Small Business Banking division (SBB) in January 2009. Brian was elevated to fill the void left by the retirement of Ken Lewis, the bank’s president and CEO, in 2010.

His tenure as head of the bank has not been easy. He has faced several critiques throughout the years, yet he has remained unwavering. In 2012, there were worries about mortgage services, as well as a sharp decline in stock prices. The following year, Brian and other CEOs were harshly reprimanded for tax evasion.
