At 90, mariachi music lost a legend, Belle Ortiz. Belle dedicated her life to mariachi music instruction. In 1970, she started a mariachi course at Lanier High School, which extended to other schools and districts. Belle’s educational work showed her passion for mariachi and Latino youth empowerment.
Belle Ortiz was affected beyond the classroom. She inspired Texas mariachi programs and set an example for other schools. In 1979, she helped San Antonio stage the first mariachi music festival in the nation.
Belle’s passion for mariachi and confidence in its cultural worth enabled amazing partnerships like symphonic concerts, expanding the genre’s visibility and respect. As Belle Ortiz’s death spread, mariachi musicians gathered at her bedside.
Over 100 Mariachi Campanas de América, musicians paid their tributes by singing to her. Belle inspired pride in her neighborhood’s heritage beyond music. Her support of Latino arts and mariachi instruction will always be recognized.
