Vasquez-Lasso was a Colombian native who had just been in the police force for five years. He was assigned to the 8th Police District, adjacent to 63rd Street and Homan Avenue, which comprised both the area he lived in and the community he served. On Thursday morning, workers draped black and purple bunting over the entrance as a mark of respect for the slain officer.
Lasso’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with burial costs and provide assistance to his loved ones going ahead. The families of the murdered officer received an outpouring of love and support during the two vigils conducted Thursday night. Numerous neighbors, Chicago police officers, and firefighters were standing arm in arm around Andres’ family.
