Jim Butcher’s first novel, which he felt was inadequate, was published when he was 19 years old. As a result, he wrote two more novels, both of which fell short of his expectations. The experience gained from composing these three novels enabled him to revise the first novel.
This is how he created his famous Harry Dresden character from the Dresden Files. These early books were composed as an assignment for a writing class. The first novel in the Dresden Files series, Storm Front, was published by Roc Books in 2000, following a series of rejections from agents and editors.
Following the success of The Dresden Files, Jim Butcher began writing The Codex Alera, a work of classic fantasy fiction. The story takes place in the Calderon Valley of Alera and focuses on the life of a young man named Tavi. In numerous respects, Alera is modeled after the Roman Empire.
The wealthy and powerful of Alera use Furies, a potent elemental force, to govern the populace. The first novel in the series, Furies of Calderon, was published in 2004. Butcher inked a contract to write a trilogy, but the success of the series compelled him to write three additional books in the series.
